Each summer, Scotland's traditions come to life across castles, Highland glens and village gatherings. This is more than a journey through spectacular landscapes. From the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo to the Glenurquhart Highland Games, we experience the country's proud traditions alongside the people who keep them alive.
Our journey begins in Edinburgh, where historic streets, royal landmarks and traditional Scottish flavours provide the perfect introduction to the country's remarkable heritage. As evening falls, the city becomes the stage for the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, where music, ceremony and tradition come together beneath the walls of Edinburgh Castle.
Travelling north into the Cairngorms, purple heather blankets the hills as we discover another side of Scotland. Royal traditions at Balmoral Castle, encounters with Scotland's iconic Highland cows and the warm welcome of Highland communities reveal a region shaped by both nature and history.
From Speyside's celebrated whisky distilleries to the legendary waters of Loch Ness and the ancient forests of Glen Affric, we experience the landscapes and traditions that define the Highlands before slowing the pace at our exclusive private country estate, where time-honoured country pursuits and relaxed evenings provide a fitting conclusion to the journey.

Designed around the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Glenurquhart Highland Games, this itinerary explores Scotland during one of its most vibrant seasons. From the historic streets of Edinburgh and the castles of the Highlands to Speyside's whisky country, legendary Loch Ness and an exclusive private Scottish country estate, each destination reveals a different side of Scotland's history, landscapes and traditions.
Scotland's great celebrations are balanced with time to experience another side of the Highlands, combining historic cities, local traditions and spectacular landscapes with quieter moments that reveal another side of the country.
Every departure is timed to make the most of Scotland's late summer, when long days, heather covered landscapes and many of the country's best-known traditions come to life. As with all seasonal travel, timings and the order of activities may occasionally change to make the most of local events and seasonal opportunities.

The Royal Mile and Old Town have welcomed travellers for centuries and remain the perfect introduction to Scotland. As we explore its historic streets, we'll discover the stories behind one of Edinburgh's most famous streets while sampling traditional Scottish flavours and local favourites along the way. It's a relaxed introduction to the city, where centuries of history, independent businesses and welcoming hospitality come together to offer an authentic first taste of Scotland.
Edinburgh takes on a different character as day turns to dusk. Historic closes, cobbled streets and elegant architecture are cast in a softer light as the castle watches over the city from Castle Rock. Exploring the capital after dark offers a memorable introduction before we return tomorrow evening for one of the highlights of our journey, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Perched high above the city on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle has shaped Scotland's story for centuries. With our local guide, we'll explore royal apartments, military history and the legends behind one of the country's most iconic landmarks while enjoying panoramic views across the capital.
Leaving the castle behind, we continue on foot through the Old Town as our guide shares the people, events and stories that shaped Scotland's capital. There's time to explore one of the city's most loved neighbourhoods, known for its independent shops, cafés and Georgian architecture, before enjoying lunch together.
This evening is one of the highlights of our Scottish journey. Returning to Edinburgh Castle, we'll enjoy the exclusive Castle Experience with a three course Scottish dinner accompanied by local whisky and wine. A behind the scenes glimpse of the performers offers a fascinating insight before we take our seats for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, where massed pipes and drums, military bands and performers from around the world come together in one of Scotland's most unforgettable traditions.

National Museum of Scotland • Explore one of the country's finest museums, where fascinating collections bring Scotland's history, culture and innovation to life.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival • Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the world's largest performing arts festival, enjoying street performers or choosing a show that captures your interest.
We'll reunite this afternoon at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the King, where we'll explore the palace's royal history and traditions. From here, we continue to Calton Hill before a short walk through Holyrood Park leads us to one of Edinburgh's finest viewpoints.
As evening settles over Edinburgh, we'll gather for drinks and light Scottish snacks overlooking the city before coming together for dinner. It's a relaxed way to round off our time in the capital before tomorrow's journey into the Highlands.

Leaving Edinburgh behind, our journey into the Highlands begins. Passing The Kelpies, the towering steel sculptures inspired by Scotland's legendary water horses, we continue to Stirling Castle, one of the country's most important royal strongholds. With our local guide, we'll explore its grand halls and historic battlements while discovering the remarkable history of monarchs including Mary, Queen of Scots.
After lunch, we visit the Wallace Monument, which stands proudly above the battlefield where Sir William Wallace secured his famous victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Sweeping views across the surrounding countryside provide a fitting setting to reflect on one of Scotland's defining moments.
From Stirling, we continue north into the Cairngorms, where mountain landscapes and Highland villages accompany our journey to the charming village of Braemar. There's time to settle in before we gather for dinner and our first evening in the Highlands.

Today's journey takes us deeper into the Cairngorms National Park, where forests, rivers and heather-covered hills create some of Scotland's most beautiful Highland scenery. We'll pause at scenic viewpoints along the way, taking time to appreciate the landscapes that make this region so distinctive.
At Balmoral Castle, the Scottish home of the Royal Family, we'll step inside elegant rooms rarely open to the public while discovering how generations of the Royal Family have embraced life in the Highlands.
Our visit concludes with an exclusive Royal Afternoon Tea, where estate produce and locally sourced ingredients are served on fine bone china inspired by the original royal table settings. Returning to Braemar, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax before we gather for dinner.

Home to more than 50 distilleries, Speyside has the greatest concentration of malt whisky producers in Scotland, making it the perfect place to discover the country's national drink. Guided by an independent whisky expert, we'll explore how Scotch whisky is made, how to appreciate its aromas and flavours, and what makes every dram unique.
With the fundamentals in place, we continue to the Speyside Cooperage, where skilled coopers craft and repair the oak casks that quietly shape every whisky's character. After lunch, we visit one of the region's renowned distilleries, following the journey from grain to glass before enjoying a premium guided tasting that brings the day's experiences together.
Dinner brings the perfect finish as we travel through the beautiful Speyside countryside to Inverness.

Set against the backdrop of Loch Ness, the Glenurquhart Highland Games celebrate the traditions that have shaped Highland communities for generations. Pipe bands, Highland dancing, heavy events and local competitions come together for a day that captures the spirit of the Highlands in one of Scotland's most beautiful settings. With the Games beginning later in the morning, there's time for a relaxed start before the opening parade and afternoon programme.
Throughout the day, there's time to wander between the different competitions, soak up the atmosphere and cheer on competitors as cabers are tossed, hammers are thrown and pipers perform. If you're feeling adventurous, you may even have the opportunity to take part in the traditional visitors' race, a light-hearted chance to become part of the day's festivities.
We'll return to Inverness this evening before gathering for dinner and sharing stories from a day immersed in Highland tradition.

This morning, we'll join a small-group cruise on Loch Ness with a local skipper whose stories, legends and insight bring Scotland's most famous loch to life. As we cruise beneath the ruins of Urquhart Castle, we'll watch the mysterious depths beneath us appear live on screen through the boat's onboard sonar in real time, offering a fascinating glimpse below the surface before stepping ashore to continue our exploration.
Exploring the ruins of Urquhart Castle, we'll uncover centuries of Highland history while taking in spectacular views across one of Scotland's most iconic lochs.
Leaving Loch Ness behind, we continue into Glen Affric, where our local guide introduces us to one of Scotland's most beautiful glens. Ancient Caledonian pine forests, sparkling lochs and mountain scenery create a landscape that feels wonderfully untouched.
Returning to Inverness later this afternoon, there's time to enjoy the city at your own pace before dinner together this evening.

Our final journey south takes us aboard one of Scotland's most scenic rail routes, winding through the Cairngorms National Park as forests, mountains and open moorland gradually give way to the gentler landscapes of Perthshire. Travelling by rail offers the perfect opportunity to relax, stretch your legs and simply enjoy the changing scenery as we leave the Highlands behind.
Arriving in Perth around lunchtime, we'll enjoy a relaxed meal before spending time exploring Scotland's former capital. Set on the banks of the River Tay, Perth offers a pleasant change of pace, with elegant streets, independent cafés and riverside walks providing the perfect setting to enjoy a leisurely afternoon before continuing to our final destination.
By mid afternoon, we'll arrive at our private country estate, where the final chapter of our Scottish adventure begins. Dating back centuries, this magnificent mansion becomes our home for the final two nights. Welcome drinks await before there's time to wander the grounds, admire the elegant interiors or simply settle into the surroundings ahead of dinner served in the estate's picturesque cobbled courtyard.

Over the past eleven days, we've explored the cobbled streets of Edinburgh, journeyed deep into the Highlands, stood before ancient castles, searched for Nessie on Loch Ness, experienced the spectacle of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and embraced the traditions of Scottish country estate life. Along the way, we've experienced a Scotland shaped as much by its people and traditions as by its remarkable landscapes.
We transfer to the airport for our onward journeys. As we part ways, we hope the memories we've shared continue to inspire new adventures for years to come.

Arrival and departure days
- Airport transfers are included for all guests arriving on Day 1 and departing on the final day of the journey
- Arrival day is intentionally designed with flexibility in mind, allowing time to settle into the hotel, explore the surrounding neighbourhood, or simply pause before the journey begins
- Our first shared experience takes place around midday on Day 1, allowing guests arriving earlier in the day time to comfortably transfer from the airport and settle in before meeting the group
- Hotel check in is typically available from 3pm onwards. Guests arriving earlier may store luggage with the hotel prior to check in
- Your tour host will be waiting to welcome you at the hotel on arrival day, offering assistance with check in and luggage storage where needed, along with recommendations for exploring the surrounding neighbourhood before the journey begins
- On departure day, no activities are planned beyond breakfast, allowing flexibility for onward travel arrangements
- We recommend booking outbound flights departing from 2pm onwards on the final day to allow comfortable transfer time to Edinburgh Airport

Seasonal weather
- August is generally one of Scotland's warmest months, with daytime temperatures typically ranging between 15°C and 22°C / 59°F to 72°F
- Weather can change quickly, particularly in the Highlands, where sunshine, cloud and light showers may all occur in a single day
- Evenings are often cooler, particularly in rural areas and after sunset
- Layered clothing, a lightweight waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes are recommended throughout the journey

Practical considerations
- In keeping with UK law, travellers under 18 years of age will not be permitted to participate in experiences involving alcohol
- Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended for historic streets, castle grounds and countryside walks
- A moderate level of mobility is recommended due to walking distances, uneven terrain and occasional staircases at historic sites
- Scotland's weather is famously changeable, so dressing in layers and carrying a lightweight waterproof jacket is recommended
- Highland Games are outdoor events and proceed in most weather conditions, adding to their authentic atmosphere
- Wildlife sightings, including Highland cows and red squirrels, are common but can never be guaranteed

We explored Skye extensively while designing this journey and found it wasn't the right fit for the experience we wanted to create. Many of the island's most celebrated locations are best enjoyed by hikers or involve long drives with relatively short stops. Instead, we've focused on experiences that offer more time outside the vehicle and a stronger balance of scenery, culture and local character. We believe it makes for a more rewarding day, and we think you will too.
Scotland's historic towns, castles and natural landscapes are best explored on foot, so a moderate level of walking should be expected throughout the journey. Most days include leisurely guided walks with plenty of opportunities to pause, alongside visits to historic sites where uneven paths, staircases and gentle inclines are common. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.
