Each winter solstice, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire comes alive as music, ceremony and centuries-old traditions celebrate Inti Raymi, Peru's most important annual festival. This is more than a journey to Machu Picchu. It is an opportunity to experience the many sides of Peru, from its Pacific coastline and Andean highlands to the extraordinary wildlife of the Peruvian Amazon.
Our journey begins in Lima, where Peru's celebrated food culture and colonial history provide the perfect introduction before we travel into the Andes.
In the Sacred Valley, remarkable Inca engineering, living traditions and the timeless streets of Ollantaytambo provide the perfect introduction to Machu Picchu. From there, we continue to Cusco, where Inti Raymi fills the city with ceremony, procession and spectacular performances celebrating the heart of the Inca Empire.
From Cusco, the Andes reveal one final side of themselves, with the freedom to choose how you'd like to experience the surrounding mountains before we leave the highlands behind and continue into the Peruvian Amazon.
Our final days are spent at a carefully selected rainforest eco lodge, where wildlife, canopy walkways and peaceful river journeys reveal one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, providing a fitting conclusion to the journey.

Our journey follows Peru's natural progression from coast to mountains and into the rainforest. Time exploring the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu is balanced with the celebrations of Inti Raymi before the journey concludes beneath the canopy of the Peruvian Amazon.
Every departure is timed to coincide with Inti Raymi and the winter solstice. As with all festivals and wildlife experiences, timings and the order of activities may occasionally change to reflect local conditions and ensure every experience takes place at the best possible time.

Barranco's colourful streets, vibrant murals and thriving food scene provide the perfect introduction to Peru. Walking between family-run eateries and neighbourhood favourites, we discover how the country's celebrated cuisine has been shaped by Indigenous traditions and influences from Europe, Africa and Asia, while gaining our first insight into everyday life in Lima.
Fresh ceviche, regional ingredients and local specialities introduce us to the flavours that have earned Lima international recognition, while conversations along the way reveal everyday life beyond the city's famous landmarks.
As evening settles over Barranco, there's time to enjoy its lively atmosphere before we settle in for the first of many relaxed dinners together.

Lima's UNESCO-listed historic center reveals centuries of Spanish colonial history through grand plazas, ornate balconies and elegant architecture. With our guide, we'll explore Plaza Mayor, Santo Domingo Convent and the impressive San Francisco Convent before descending into its famous catacombs, where another chapter of the city's story lies hidden beneath the streets.
Lunch overlooking Huaca Pucllana, one of Lima's most important pre-Columbian archaeological sites, provides a fascinating contrast between the city's ancient and colonial past.
This afternoon, we cruise to the Palomino Islands, home to one of Peru's largest sea lion colonies. Wetsuits and life jackets are provided for those wishing to enter the water and swim alongside these playful animals, while others can simply enjoy watching the colony from the comfort of the boat as sea lions gather across the rocky shoreline.
Back on dry land, the rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the Miraflores neighbourhood or simply enjoy ice cream with ocean views before we reunite for dinner.

After a short flight to Cusco and a scenic drive into the Sacred Valley, we arrive in Ollantaytambo, one of Peru's best-preserved living Inca towns. Cobbled streets, centuries-old irrigation channels and remarkable Inca engineering reveal a community where daily life continues much as it has for generations. A guided orientation introduces the town's history and helps us find our bearings before a relaxed lunch. It's our first opportunity to savour the flavours of the Sacred Valley while settling into life in the Andes.
This afternoon, a hands-on Bean to Bar chocolate workshop introduces another side of Peru's rich agricultural heritage. From roasting cacao beans to grinding, tasting and crafting our own chocolates, we experience every step of the journey while discovering why Peruvian cacao is celebrated by chocolatiers around the world.
There's time to enjoy Ollantaytambo at your own pace before we regroup for dinner, savouring more flavours of the region.

We travel to Moray this morning, where vast circular terraces descend into the earth, creating a series of natural microclimates believed to have been used to experiment with crops that would one day feed an empire stretching across the Andes.
After lunch, those wishing to experience more of the Sacred Valley on foot can join an optional guided hike to Maras, following scenic countryside trails through the Andean landscape. The walk takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. Guests preferring a more relaxed pace travel comfortably by vehicle, with both groups reuniting at the remarkable Maras Salt Mines.
Thousands of brilliant white salt pools cascade down the mountainside, fed by a natural spring that has flowed since pre-Inca times. Still harvested by local families today, the terraces preserve a tradition that has endured for generations while creating one of Peru's most distinctive landscapes.
Returning to Ollantaytambo, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy before dinner and tomorrows long-awaited visit to Machu Picchu.

With our guide, we'll explore the citadel of Machu Picchu, discovering the temples, terraces and ceremonial spaces that have captivated travellers for generations. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, its setting among cloud forest-covered mountains is every bit as extraordinary as the engineering that has allowed it to endure for centuries.
There's time to experience Machu Picchu at your own pace. Continue exploring the archaeological site, walk to the Sun Gate for sweeping views across the valley, or simply pause to absorb the atmosphere of one of the world's most celebrated landmarks.
The return journey to Ollantaytambo offers one final opportunity to admire the dramatic landscapes of the Sacred Valley before dinner and a chance to reflect on an unforgettable day.

The winter solstice marks the beginning of Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, the most important celebration of the Inca calendar. Our day follows the festival from its ceremonial beginnings at Qorikancha, once the Inca Empire's most sacred temple, before continuing to Plaza de Armas as music, dancers and richly dressed performers fill the historic streets of Cusco.
This afternoon we'll make our way to Sacsayhuamán, where reserved Orange Zone VIP seating provides outstanding views of the festival finale. More than three hundred performers recreate ancient ceremonies through traditional music, colourful costumes and centuries-old rituals against the backdrop of one of the Inca Empire's most important archaeological sites.
As the celebrations draw to a close, there's time to enjoy Cusco's lively atmosphere before dinner, with the flexibility to choose from a selection of carefully chosen restaurants.

This morning we leave the Andes behind and fly east towards the Peruvian Amazon. On arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our journey continues by boat as the rainforest gradually closes in around us, offering our first glimpse of one of the world's richest ecosystems.
Our rainforest eco lodge becomes home for the next two nights. There's time to settle in, enjoy lunch and simply listen as the sounds of the forest replace the rhythm of the city.
As darkness falls, the rainforest reveals an entirely different side of itself. Accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, our night walk introduces frogs, insects, nocturnal birds and countless other creatures that emerge beneath the forest canopy. Every walk is different, making this a fascinating introduction to the extraordinary wildlife that calls the rainforest home.

Arrival and departure days

- Our first shared experience takes place around midday on Day 1, allowing guests arriving earlier in the day time to comfortably transfer from the airport and settle in before meeting the group
- Hotel check in is typically available from 3pm onwards. Guests arriving earlier may store luggage with the hotel prior to check in
- Your tour host will be waiting to welcome you at the hotel on arrival day, offering assistance with check in and luggage storage where needed, along with recommendations for exploring the surrounding neighbourhood before the journey begins

- The Sacred Valley and Cusco experience cool, dry days with daytime temperatures of approximately 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F) and chilly mornings and evenings that may fall to 2°C to 7°C (36°F to 45°F)
- Machu Picchu enjoys comfortable daytime temperatures of around 17°C to 22°C (63°F to 72°F)
- Puerto Maldonado and the Amazon Rainforest remain warm and humid throughout the year, with daytime temperatures generally between 26°C and 31°C (79°F to 88°F)
- Layers are recommended, particularly in the Andes where temperatures vary significantly between morning, afternoon and evening

Rather than travelling straight to Cusco, we begin in the lower lying Sacred Valley, allowing your body time to adjust before visiting Machu Picchu and attending Inti Raymi. Most travellers adapt comfortably by following our relaxed pace, staying hydrated and avoiding overexertion during the first few days.
