In December, northern Norway enters a world of long Arctic nights, snow covered landscapes and skies alive with the possibility of the Northern Lights. Mountains rise from deep fjords, forests disappear beneath snow and winter becomes part of everyday life. It is one of the most remarkable times to experience the far north, when darkness creates the opportunity to witness one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles.
Our journey begins in Oslo, where Christmas markets, Nordic food and winter traditions offer a gentle introduction to Norway before we travel north to Tromsø. Beyond the Arctic Circle, dramatic fjords, colourful streets and Arctic traditions provide the setting for encounters with Sámi culture, reindeer and huskies, while evenings bring opportunities to experience the Northern Lights in some of the region's most beautiful surroundings.
From Tromsø, we continue to Alta, where the landscape becomes wilder and the sense of space more pronounced. Here, we'll search the Altafjord for humpback whales and orcas, discover thousands of years of Arctic history through its World Heritage rock art and travel through snowy landscapes by traditional horse drawn sleigh. Along the way, meals around Arctic fires and time spent with local hosts offer a glimpse into the warmth and traditions that make life in the north possible through the winter.
Our journey reaches its most extraordinary finale at Sorrisniva Ice Hotel, where we'll spend a night surrounded by rooms, sculptures and architecture carved entirely from snow and ice. It is a fitting end to a journey that embraces winter rather than simply visiting it, before we return south to Oslo and our onward journeys.

Oslo begins with a taste of modern Norway in Grünerløkka, the city's creative and characterful neighborhood where former industrial streets have become home to independent cafés, food markets and some of the city's most interesting kitchens. Accompanied by a local guide, we'll explore the neighborhood through its food, discovering the flavours, traditions and ingredients that have shaped Norwegian cuisine, from the country's rich coastal waters and wild landscapes to its distinctive Nordic food culture.
Along the way, we'll move between local bakeries, bustling food markets and independent restaurants, sampling traditional favourites alongside contemporary interpretations of Norwegian cuisine. From freshly baked pastries and smoked fjord fish to hearty reindeer and wild-game dishes, each tasting offers another glimpse into the relationship between Norway's landscape, seasons and food traditions.
As winter darkness settles over Oslo, the city's Christmas markets bring the center to life with glowing lights, wooden stalls, seasonal treats and the unmistakable atmosphere of the festive season. We'll take in the warmth and energy of the city before gathering for our welcome dinner, bringing everyone together as our journey through Norway begins.

Beyond Oslo, we'll head into the snow covered forests and frozen lakes of the Norwegian winter, where a warm bonfire and a traditional outdoor lunch await beside the water. Surrounded by woodland and winter scenery, we'll settle around the fire to enjoy local flavours including smoked meats, Norwegian sausages, fresh bread and warm drinks, embracing the simple pleasures of life outdoors in Norway.
With the lake frozen beneath the winter landscape, there's also the chance to try traditional ice fishing when conditions allow. For generations, winter has brought Norwegians outdoors, and this experience offers a wonderful glimpse into that connection with nature, whether trying your hand at fishing, exploring the woodland or simply enjoying the warmth of the fire and the stillness of the landscape.
By late afternoon, we'll return to Oslo with time to enjoy the city before dinner together, with the Christmas lights and markets providing a fitting end to our time in the capital.

Flying north to Tromsø this morning, the landscape changes dramatically as mountains rise from deep fjords and islands emerge from the Arctic Sea. We'll begin our time above the Arctic Circle at the Arctic University Museum of Norway, discovering the science, history and northern traditions that have shaped life in this extraordinary part of the world.
As darkness settles, we'll head onto the fjord aboard a beautifully restored wooden vessel, leaving the lights of Tromsø behind as mountains and winter skies surround us. Between courses of dinner, we'll step into floating saunas and wood fired hot tubs, with the Arctic landscape stretching into the darkness around us. Later, we'll gather inside a traditional lavvu around the fire for a hearty Sámi dinner and stories of life in the far north, with the Arctic sky above us.

If the Northern Lights appear, we'll already be in one of the most extraordinary settings imaginable to watch them unfold above us.

Nothing about a wildlife encounter can be guaranteed, which is precisely what makes every sighting so special. The anticipation of watching the horizon, followed by the sudden appearance of a humpback whale or a pod of orcas, is an experience that stays with you long after we return to shore.
Back in Alta, we'll have time to continue exploring the region's remarkable story, with a visit to the Alta Museum and World Heritage Rock Art Centre, home to one of Northern Europe's most significant collections of prehistoric rock art. Then it's our turn to work with the ice. Guided by skilled artisans, we'll learn how to shape solid blocks into our own sculptures before raising a glass in the Ice Bar and sitting down to lunch at Sorrisniva.
With the afternoon to enjoy the hotel at a relaxed pace, there's an opportunity to return to favourite spaces, take photographs and appreciate the extraordinary setting before we gather for our farewell dinner. Over the past eleven days, we've experienced Norway from Oslo's festive streets and winter forests to the fjords and Arctic traditions of Tromsø, before travelling north to Alta for encounters with whales, Sámi culture and the extraordinary landscapes of the far north. From reindeer and husky sledding to floating beneath Arctic skies and spending our final night in a hotel made entirely of ice, this has been a journey filled with experiences found nowhere else.
We return to Oslo for our onward international departures. As we part ways, we hope the memories we've shared continue to inspire new adventures for years to come.

Arrival and departure days
- Airport transfers are included for all guests arriving on Day 1 and departing on the final day of the journey

- Our first shared experience takes place around midday on Day 1, allowing guests arriving earlier in the day time to comfortably transfer from the airport and settle in before meeting the group
- Hotel check in is typically available from 3pm onwards. Guests arriving earlier may store luggage with the hotel prior to check in

Winter temperatures in northern Norway typically range between -5°C and -15°C, though colder conditions can occasionally occur.
Despite the temperatures, the Arctic cold is often drier and calmer than many travellers expect, and indoor spaces throughout the journey are heated.
Warm winter clothing is essential throughout the journey, particularly during outdoor Arctic experiences.
We recommend thermal base layers, insulated winter jackets, waterproof winter footwear with grip, gloves, scarves, hats, and thick socks suitable for snow and extended time outdoors. Thermal or moisture wicking layers are recommended over cotton where possible.
For certain activities, additional thermal outerwear may also be provided by local operators.
This journey is designed to be immersive rather than physically exhausting, though Arctic winter conditions naturally involve outdoor movement and time spent in cold environments.
Experiences may include walking on snow or uneven winter surfaces, outdoor winter activities, and time spent in remote natural settings.
